Golden Thread Gallery, Belfast - Outside and Between, Belfast Festival at Queens

Outside and Between examines how perceptions of artists from Northern Ireland are informed by the context in which their work is seen, categorized and discussed. Taking in to account not only subject matter, genre and materiality but also preconceptions about antecedents, practice and platform, the exhibition examines how artists relate to and are identified with Northern Ireland. 

The exhibition features works by Michael Alcorn, St. Claire Allen, Betty Brown, Gerard Devlin, Philip Flanagan, Willie Heron,Tony Hill, Terry McAllister, Mark McGreevy, Rory Moore, Philip Mussen, Eddie Rafferty, Martin Wedge & Derek Wilson. 

Shân McAnena is an art historian and curator, director of the The Naughton Gallery and the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s.

The exhibition continues until 24^th November 2012 and the Gallery opening hours are: Tuesday – Friday 10.30 am – 5.30 pm & Saturday 10.30 am – 4.00pm

The Purity of Brightness

An exhibition of Paintings by Philip Flanagan.

The exhibition stems from numerous visits to Kearney in County Down.

In the paintings I suggest rather than describe the topography of the landscape, the paintings are  a contour of my feeling or response to the setting, an inscape as opposed to a landscape.

I am using colour as a means of expression. Form and light are achieved by working over coloured grounds, patterns of colour creating energy. The strength of the colours is held in balance by structure, which emphasises their vibrancy, but resolves it into an overall calm.

The compositions create a sense of simplicity and purity, built on formal principles of firmness and balance, proportion and structure. I am interested in the plastic space of a flat plane, such as a canvas: perceived rather than real space.

There is an image from Apollinaire that conveys the beauty of light - 

The window opens like an orange / the beautiful fruit of life.

The Heroes in the Dark House

The exhibition for the tenth Benedict Kiely Literary celebrations is entitled The Heroes in the Dark House. The title has been taken from one of Benedict Kielys short stories from his 1963 anthology Journey to the Seven Streams. 

The exhibition for the tenth Benedict Kiely Literary celebrations is entitled The Heroes in the Dark House. The title has been taken from one of Benedict Kiely's short stories from his 1963 anthology Journey to the Seven Streams.
One of the underlying themes of the short story is the strong oral and literary heritage in Ireland and it this theme which has prompted curator Terry Sweeney to assemble portraits of some of Ireland's great twentieth century Irish literary "heroes" depicted by some of Ireland's foremost visual artists.
The exhibition displays a wide variety of media; drawings, watercolours, oil paintings, bronze sculptures and prints by artists such as Basil Blackshaw, Brian Ballard, Estella Solomons and Norah Mc Guinness. It includes images of writers with strong connections to Omagh; Brian Friel, John Montague, Alice Milligan as well as Benedict Kiely. It also includes portraits of William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce and John Millington Synge as well as more recent portraits of Seamus Heaney and Michael Longley.
The works have been selected from the Crawford Collection in Cork, The Abbey Theatre in Dublin, the Arts Council of Ireland, the Ulster Museum, Dublin Writers Museum, The Model, Niland Collection in Sligo, the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, as well as from various private collections. 

The exhibition will be launched on Friday 9th September by Beragh born architect, Mr Des Mc Mahon who was elected President of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 2009.
