" I always took my studies very seriously - worked very hard, and succeeded in getting a university entrance scholarship, and in doing an honours degree in Latin and in Greek, the ancient classics... and then I went to Maynooth, and that was boarding and it was austere and strict, but one lived in a society which had great respect for authority and for authority figures, which was a culture of scarcity, a culture in which waste was strongly discouraged, because whatever we had we worked for."

"And he had seen my name on a Red Cross list of survivors, and he wrote just to ask whether I needed anything... or would I let him know how I was. So we started writing, and it became a regular correspondence, and eventually in June 1947 Harry came to Prague and we got married. And this is how I came to live in Belfast."
